Independent Walking on the Camino Frances
Camino Frances (Self Guided) - Camino de Santiago
Give me my scallop-shell of quiet,
My staff of faith to walk upon,
My scrip of joy, immortal diet,
My bottle of salvation,
My gown of glory, hope's true gage,
And thus I'll make my pilgrimage.
Sir Walter Raleigh. Poet and polymath (1552-1618)
The Way for some, a long distance walk with history for others. This ancient pilgrim’s route to the reputed resting place of the Apostle St. James has something for everyone. A decade’s experience guiding on the Camino Frances and putting together itineraries for Frontier’s clients means we are uniquely placed to design and tailor make each holiday. We offer accommodation and luggage transfers as a package.
We don’t work to any set template like so many other companies that offer packages on the Camino. We prefer to design each Camino walk according to your walking ability. We are happy to call you by telephone to go over your needs and expectations before you undertake the walk.
Traditionally, in medieval times, the journey to Santiago would start from your own front door, taking it every step of the way! However, nowadays the Camino Frances typically starts from just inside the French/Spanish border at the small town of St Jean Pied de Port. A fairly tough climb takes you over the Pyrenees, (please note that there is the option of a lower easier route), and down into Spain.
The major cities of Pamplona, Leon and Burgos are spread at equal intervals along the nearly 800 kms to Santiago de Compostela, with many small hamlets, villages and towns peppered in between.
We are regularly requested to organise the walk covering the final 100kms of this route to Santiago, which then makes you eligible for the Compostela certificate.
We have considerable experience tailoring walks from a few to over one hundred days, starting from as far away as Le Puy in France. Many of our clients elect to complete the entire Camino Frances, in managable sections over a longer period of time - we are delighted to welcome them back annually, ready to plan their next stage of this incredible journey.
A decade of working with folk along the Way, means we now have a fine working relationship with many small family run friendly hotels and inns. All the rooms have en suite facilities and are usually situated right on the Camino.
Bag transfers are organised so that all you have to worry about is carrying a day sack with your essential items.
